From the old Negro Spiritual Im Troubled In Mind by Spiritual Workshop Paris
Im troubled
Im troubled
Im troubled in mind
If the lord dont help me
Then surely
Ill die
Dark days came
So to the lord I prayed
Help me bear it
I asked and he gave me his Aid
She said it was time for her to go
That she had been ignored long enough
That people dont see greatness
When it stands before them
And when God send Angels
They disregard them
She said it was time for her to go
She had been ignored long enough
That the attention she did get
Was usually attached to the back hand or fist from her father
That her mother
Found it more important to smoke
Cigarettes and drink scotch
Than kiss her on the cheek
And that the afternoon soap operas
Was the only thing that moved her emotionally
She said it was time for her to go
As she stared blank
Asked me questions like
If I was the most beautiful snowflake
That hit the ground and melted
would people still know I was there
If I was the epitome of Gods grace
Would they see me?
She said Angels weep too
Angels have fears too she cried
Sat tongue-tied
No encouraging words to speak to her
My heart ripped into pieces
I sat tongue-tied
Knowing not what to do
Searched my self wisdom
And came up empty
I wanted so badly to change her stride
To make her see the beauty she had
Felt like life had promised her love
And lied
I could never dry her tears
Never take away her fears
But now I wouldnt have the years
To reverse Loneliness
Troubled in mind she was
Sat on the front porch singing Old Negro Spirituals
Hoping ancestors would wrap themselves around her
Cause Babylon is fallin
Take her to the river Jordan
Where she could lay her burdens down
So she wouldnt have to keep
Carrying her shield and sword around
Cause before shed be a slave
Shed rather be buried in her grave
So she started climbing up the mountain
So she could ask Daniel where he saw the saw the stone
Took flight from the cliff
Cause all Gods Children got wings
And she is the sparrow his eyes are on
Come with me she said
The angels can change your name too
And youll no longer feel buked and scorned
No more hard trials
I told her to just hold on
Im sorry ,but I cant stay behind
Blow your trumpet Gabriel she sang
Tell the angels to come down
Take me to have a little talk god
So I can ask if he remembers me
Cause I feel lost like that old Pharaoh
Wading in the water
Trying to find my fathers home
I prayed that God would walk with her
Tell her mother not to weep
Cuz nobody really knows her troubles
And what better place than in Arms of God
For her to sit and rest for while
She looked back at me said she was free
Now let her fly
I realized that this was the last time
I would see an Angel smile
