Let me preface the following statement by saying, I am not especially deep. I try to keep my thoughts as shallow as possible. Having said that, let me say...

I think that people whose perception of God changes from the Old Testament to the New Testament are the shallow ones. Or rather, their understanding of God is shallow. They are what Paul calls children in the faith. Regardless, of their extensive knowledge of the Bible and complimenting texts, they have know knowledge of G.O.D.

I would like to know what you define as being "primatve".

I do not think that the inhabitants of the Earth in the OT where any more shallow or foolish than we are today? Although, it could be that what you mean and what I am understanding you to mean are two different things. If he had lived "in" them as He now does with us instead of living "among" them I don't think that we would be as "evolved" as we are. I think that Him having chosen to live first "among" the people, and the information we have on the dynamics of that relationship, gives todays Christians a point of reference to grow from. I don't think it had anything to do with their intelligence or lack thereof. It had more to do with the fact that they were feeling their way. They were making the mistakes we would have made in their place. So, we now have the reference of saying, "See what happens to your relationship with God when you are disobedient? See, what happens when you lie? See what happens, when you place other gods before Him?"
It is easy for us to stand in the now and look back on their lives and condemn them for their mistakes, but in their place [although most don't want to admit it] many of us would have made the same mistakes over and over again as they did. The truth of the matter is, we ARE making those mistakes over and over again. It is simply that we don't have to wait a year for atonement.
